A Career in Aeronautical Engineering

In the recent years, India has demonstrated to the world its potential to be the technological hub for aerospace engineering in Asia. Chandrayan’s success in exploring the moon by ISRO, a big headway in medium range transport aircraft design by National Aeronautics Limited, the achievement of Agni & Prithvi missile systems by DRDO and the success of indigenous Light Combat Aircraft design by Aeronautical Development Agency are a few examples worth a mention. Manufacture of combat aircrafts under license agreement and indigenous helicopters by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd give a big boost to Aeronautics and Aerospace in India.

In this background, aeronautical engineering has become the most sought after branch of study by engineering students today. In line with this trend, VTU started a four years bachelor course in aero engineering in 2006. VTU’s curriculum is a combination of core mechanical engineering subjects and advanced subjects like,   Finite Element Analysis, Numerical Methods, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Control Engineering, Avionics, and Flight Testing etc apart from core subjects like Aerodynamics, Propulsion and Aircraft Structures.

Today, Bangalore is said to be the aero-capital of India, because many of the R&D facilities (ADA, ADE, ISRO, GTRE etc) and manufacturing installations (HAL factories) of the country are located here. SCT Institute of Technology is co-located among several DRDO laboratories and PSUs such as HAL & BEML in Bangalore. SCT Institute of Technology started Aeronautical Engineering course at BE level in 2007 with a vision to provide trained Scientists / Engineers to the growing Aerospace Industry. The college has a modern industry standard Wind Tunnel to carry out aerodynamic studies and a single engine Cessna trainer aircraft for live demonstration. Thus our students not only have a sound academic input but also have the opportunity to visit Aero India Show, flying clubs, technical conferences to make themselves abreast with latest trends in the field of Aeronautics. The rapid growth in the aviation industry is an indicator of the career potential of aeronautical engineers.
