SCT Institute of Technology Skypers Have Done It Again

SKYPERS, the aero modeling club of SCT Institute of Technology (SCTIT) have brought laurels not only to themselves but also to the college where they are pursuing engineering degree.

First Advent:
The team designed and rigged up an early model of a Hovercraft and participated in “Hover On” Zonal Competition at Coimbatore held on 30 Sep 2012 at PSG College of Engineering. This model was of ‘Open bag skirt design’ with single electrical ducted fan (EDF) for thrust (900gms) as well as lift. Its dimensions were 260 X 300 X 150mm and weighed 600gms. The image below shows the Hovercraft in action during 2nd round (on the left lane) in Coimbatore zonal.

SCTIT team won 3rd position in ‘HOVER ON’ at Coimbatore Zonal. About 14 colleges from the southern zone competed including IIST, Trivandrum, AIT, Tamil Nadu and PESIT, Bangalore.

The Mumbai Zonal:
Without resting on the laurels at Coimbatore, SPYKERS started preparing for the next bigger event to be organized at Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai on 14 Oct 2012. The Mumbai Zonal competition had around 30 teams representing about 25 Colleges including a team from IIT, Bombay,     S P College of Engineering, Mumbai and R V College of Engineering, Bangalore.  SKYPERS participated with their upgraded design of the hovercraft.
This model was also of ‘Open bag skirt design’ with single servo for rudder operations and single EDF for thrust (900gms) and lift. Its dimensions were 190 X 270 X 100mm with a dead weight being 350gms; i.e., more than 40% reduction in weight, rendered the hover craft very agile and easy to control and maneuver.
  • SKYPERS with other participants at Mumbai Zonal Final
  • Performance in final round at Mumbai Zonal
  • SCTIT team won the 1st position in Mumbai Zonal and Qualified for the final round in Techfest 2013 to be held at IIT Bombay.
Final round at Techfest 2013:
Techfest 2013 was organized at IIT, Bombay on 3rd to 5th JAN 2013. A new rivalry was set to take stage in the annals of Asia’s largest science and technology festival Techfest. Mixing the theme of holistic development with the vicarious pleasure derived in watching a thrilling contest of machines battling it out by the skin of their teeth, Techfest unveils an initiative of its kind: TechOlympics

TechOlympics strived to reach out to every tech-enthusiast from the farthest corners of the country and gathered winners in different spheres of technology. Teams first competed in the  qualifiers at their respective zones viz. Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Indore, Jaipur, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai and form zonal contingents comprising of 8 teams with 2 each adept at the 4 technology skill sets that were tested. The genres were:
  1. Line Following
  2. Aqua Robotics
  3. Aeromodelling
  4. Coding
SCTIT was represented by SKYPERS with their improved model to compete with designers from all six zones of India in Aero modeling genre. The latest hovercraft was built of lighter material and reduction in EDF from 70mm to 55mm with a closed bag skirt design. Its overall dimensions shrunk further to 160 X 270 X <80mm and another 50% reduction in weight to <170gms.

SKYPERS’ Hover On Model:-

Competition Arena
1.The track was smooth with sharp turns and obstacles. In this task, both speed and control will be important. The hovercraft should be able to cross slopes, hurdles, water and other obstacles on the track and outdo its opponents while maintaining its stability and not compromising on its pace. There were 4 challenges that the track posed:
  • Up-slope or down-slope or both of maximum 10 degrees. --- Points allotted: 50
  • Hurdles of width 30cms spaced at 70cms. --- Points allotted: 40
  • Slope of 10 degrees followed by water of max depth 18cms. --- Points allotted: 100
  • A surprise element. --- Points allotted: 100

2.The width of the track was around 100cms for most of the part.

3.Only two team members were to be present at the arena, one with the controller standing in the blue square of 2mX2m and the other person can move around but outside the track.

SCTIT team consising of Anirudh, Prakash and Shashank completed the task in 48 seconds with the highest score of 780 points and won the first position amongst 14 teams from 6 zones across the country. They were awarded cash prize and certificates for their brilliant contribution. Well Done and keep it up.

Having tasted glory in their very first venture the SKYPERS are not going to cool their heels yet. They have already set their sight to greater heights. Yes, it’s time to look forwards and upwards; Forwards into the future and upwards into the sky. An eclectic fusion of aeromodelling and robotics, to design a model vehicle that combines the best of a car with the freedom of an aircraft. A chance to take your feet off the ground while still be a match for those on it!

SCT Institute of Technology (SCTIT) was the only Engineering college from Bangalore to have qualified in the zonals and to participate in the finals to secure the FIRST position.
